When it comes to the best credit report in the United States, your options are improving these days. Improving because there’s more competition to get your attention as a consumer, in the forms of paid or unpaid subscriptions, than, say five years ago.

The Best Credit Report Is The Free Credit Report

By Federal law you have the right to receive one copy of your credit report per year from each of the consumer credit report agencies. You can do so by phone, mail and on The World Wide Web. This service is the only site authorized by law to provide free access to all three agencies once a year.

Finding The Best Credit ReportYou should take advantage of this service every year. Personally, I have it marked on my calendar to do every Fall, in addition to having a credit monitoring service, which notifies me of changes or any events in my credit status. That’s the short answer to the question of what’s the best credit report agency, the smarty-pants answer. It needs some explaining and justification because the more detail, more honest answer is “it depends”.

Kneeling At The Altar of The Big Three Credit Report Agencies

It is always good to know what information other banks and other institutions can find out about you. It’s safe to say that these days, it is accepted practice for them to judge the risk of interacting with you by pulling your credit score and report. The other, darker issue is being alert for anything on your report that is erroneous or suspicious. If someone’s fraudulently using your credit profile, you want to be able to respond and dispute charges as soon as possible.

In The United States there are three consumer credit Report Agencies that track and record information for the purpose of lending you money, as defined by the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which governs the industry. These three are generally the best credit report providers and the ones the most information about you.

These are Equifax, Experian and Transunion and they have a huge volume of information about consumers. Any time you get credit from a company it’s probably going to be reported to at least one of these three. If it’s been a while (a year or more) or you’ve never done it, get your free annual statutory reports as soon as possible.

The reason you need to check all three is that each Credit Report Agency may note a few different things. While the majority of events will likely be reported to each, credit-reporting entities don’t necessarily report to all three of the big agencies. Once you look at your report, assuming there’s activity, you may find that they vary slightly by content. They also have slightly different criteria for generating credit scores. So when you get different numbers from each, don’t worry unless they are hundreds of points apart.

The limitations of credit monitoring services depend on which one you use. Experian gives me alerts when changes occur, monthly updates to my Experian credit score and report. They are happy to sell reports from all three at a rate of $40. I’m not making an endorsement here, the service is adequate and, when I’ve done my annual checks. However not all items show up through every agency.

There Are Some Alternatives Out There

Credit Karma gives a wide range of information for free although it’s not as detailed as the reporting agencies it could be called the best credit report option available all year round with no obligations. Is Credit Karma accurate? I would say reasonably accurate. But, that is another reason you want to sign up for a statutory free report from the big three credit report agencies, to get a comparison. Credit Karma currently use your Transunion credit score along a tool that lets you see how your score would change if you pay off loans or take out new ones.

You should definitely get your free reports if you haven’t already done so. But whatever you choose, you really need to check protect yourself by finding own your best credit report options.
